Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi-low begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many players get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same notion in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high hand, as well as a few battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
