Omaha Hi/Low: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi/lo starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, and many battling for the low.
