Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed participating in numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really competitive in these card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The real improvement in his game began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would frequently play against one another. Howard was able to access several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
