Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he enjoyed betting on various card games at a young age. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played extensive hours and lost most times. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. The real improvement in his game happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the foremost players in chess. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
